Abstract

This study examined agricultural technology adoption among smallholder farmers and its association with farm income. Cross-sectional data were collected from 426 smallholder farming households in Hue City, Vietnam, using a structured questionnaire. Percentage and regression analysis were employed to analyze patterns of technology adoption and identify their socio-economic and institutional determinants, as well as associated income differences between adopters and non-adopters. The results indicated that mechanised land and soil preparation (55.4%), improved seed varieties (45.4%), and modern harvesting machines (34.9%) are the most commonly adopted agricultural technologies among smallholders. Technology adoption is significantly associated with farmers’age, education level, farm size, participation in technical training, and access to agricultural input services (p < 0.05). In particular, younger and better educated farmers with larger farm sizes and improved access to inputs are more likely to adopt new agricultural technologies than their counterparts. Adopters of agricultural technologies earn significantly higher farm income than non-adopters. The results highlight the importance of strengthening agricultural extension services through practical, farmer-oriented training programs that incorporate demonstrations and hands-on learning approachesto facilitate wider technology adoption and support sustainable income growth among smallholder farmers in developing country contexts
